Established in 1976 within the Bhal region of Shaurashstra, this park is situated approximately 42 km from Bhavnagar, the district headquarters city. This area is locally known as Bhal, literally meaning the forehead because of its flat vast extent. Embracing the coasts of the Gulf of Khambhat to the south, the park spans an area of 34.08 km². Initially, it served as a "vidi" (grassland) utilized by the Maharaja of the princely state of Bhavnagar for hunting blackbucks with his renowned hunting cheetahs. On its northern side, the park is bordered by wastelands and agricultural fields. Classified as a 4B Gujarat-Rajwada biotic province within a semi-arid biogeographically zone, the National Park showcases a unique ecological setting.
Situated between the Parvalia and Alang rivers, both draining into the Gulf of Cambay, the grassland encounters periodic flooding during the monsoon season. Predominantly, the blackbuck herds inhabit the northern region of the sanctuary, while the southern part features patches of thorn forest, creating an ideal setting for bird watching, particularly for birds of prey.
